Clay Changers
For a week in July, the youth groups from churches in my home county of Clay come together for Clay Changers. This organizations was put together by some leaders of the churches in order to assist the elderly and disabled with repairing their homes. This particular year, I was counselor for the girls and also was an adult helper which I meant I helped the team complete the work on the site and made sure they stayed on task. For this particular house, the owner wanted it painted, so for a week we pressure washed and painted the house, even in the rain. The girls worked really hard and were excited to see their accomplishments at the end of the week. This opportunity helped me to see that sometimes this demographic can’t even afford to paint their house or install a ramp because of how expensive, even simple design and construction can be. As environmental designers, affordable design is one of the problems we focus on, and the volunteer work helped me to realize how badly it is needed.
