Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief

When Hurricane Harvey and Irma swept through Texas and Florida, the members of Baptist Campus Ministry decided to go during our fall break to help with disaster relief efforts. We were assigned to Vidor, Texas to help the victims of Harvey. My family and I had survived a tornado before, so I thought I knew what the storm damage would look like. I learned, however that just because one may not be able to see damage on the inside, does not mean there is not any on the inside. The house we were assigned had to be completely gutted. The water had risen three to three feet inside the house, and because of mold, we had to tear out all the paneling and flooring. The elderly lady who lived there had built the house with her husband, and the only thing she had been able to save was a suitcase of clothes and one filled with pictures. With everything she had been through though, she still wore a smile on her face. She loved telling us stories from her life and would talk to us for hours even while we were working. She was still so happy despite all of what she had been through. It reminded me that materials things truly can not buy happiness. As long as we have our health, family, and friends we have all we need. I hope to one day go back to Vidor to see how things have changed since the recovery and maybe to meet that kind lady again.
