Kayaking the Coosa: Experiencing the History of Wetumpka on the River

Back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, Wetumpka, Alabama experienced a unique event. A meteor the size of a college football stadium struck the area and left a sizable crater. Later when Wetumpka was established, it was built in and around the crater. The people of the city are proud of their history, and they hope to eventually open a center for education about the meteor and the history of Wetumpka. My peers and I were tasked to develop proposals for this center and the programs it could offer. The Coosa River flows through Wetumpka and much of its history has revolved around the river. One can even see evidence of the meteor strike in and around the river from where it pushed up the rocks in the water. This section of the Coosa is also a popular spot for kayakers, As such, my proposal was for the meteor center to develop a kayaking center and trail and offer guided trips down the river to showcase the history and beauty of Wetumpka and the surrounding area. The center would be called Fireball Kayaking Outfiitters and the trail would be named the Historic Coosa River Trail.. Besides kayaking, the outfiitters would also have displays containing artifacts from the meteor center's collection and a bunk room for employees and visiting scientists and interns. It would also promote a relationship between the center and Fort Toulouse, the site of a Native American settlement and a fort. An aggreement would have to be made in order to be able to pick up paddlers at the end of the trip and bring them back to the center. This kayaking outfitters and trail would be a great asset to Wetumpka and would promote more tourism in the area.
