Sustainability Education in
Ashland, Alabama

Like many rural towns, Ashland’s identity is tied to its surroundings. All throughout its history, its citizens have made a living from its surrounding natural capital and still do. The movement of all the community capitals effects Ashland’s natural capital, and as a result sometimes does harm. For example, due to our cabinet industry, we depend heavily on timber cutting, and our waterways sometimes suffer from runoff from cattle and poultry farms. The need for sustainability programs is pertinent. Ashland could transform into a sustainable town, the potential is there, but it will take some work. Through this proposal, I discussed Ashland and its many types of capital and will be making recommendations based on community education and involvement.
